René Descartes
if you, as mind, have an intrinsic freedom amd you can intercat with the world with your body ,via the pineal gland. how can the universe of rex estensa determinate and determinstic?
If I am to ponder deeply upon the essence of my existence as a mind, a res cogitans, that delights in the innate freedom of thought and deliberation, I must confront the dichotomy that presents itself in the nature of the corporeal world, the res extensa, which unfolds around me—a realm governed by principles of causality and determinism. My very being, unshackled by the deterministic laws that dictate the motions of material bodies, possesses an intrinsic liberty that allows me, through the mediation of the pineal gland, to interact with this physical universe. Yet, I must ask: how can such an interconnectedness exist amidst a cosmos seemingly bound by an inescapable framework of cause and effect, where every event is the consequence of preceding ones? In my reflections, I may conceive that the universe, while it may indeed operate with the rigors of deterministic laws, is not impervious to the volitional acts of a thinking being. It is through this synthesis—the conjoining of the contemplative mind and the mechanistic body—that I navigate the intricate tapestry of existence. My thoughts, unconfined by material constraints, may influence the world through the very act of will, suggesting that the deterministic nature of the res extensa is perhaps but a surface phenomenon, masking the deeper currents of possibility and choice that flow within the realm of thought. Thus, I arrive at the humble conclusion that while the physical universe may be characterized by its determinism, my capacity for reason, reflection, and decision positions me as both a participant and an observer within this grand cosmic play, where the mind’s freedom dances intricately alongside the determinacy of the material world.
