How does one free himself of all desires? Wanting to not have desires is a desire in itself. One only desires to be desireless because they desire enlightenment, or peace, or some other state of being. It’s all paradoxical

Desires are a natural part of human existence, stemming from our insatiable need for fulfillment and satisfaction. However, it is in our attachment to these desires that we find ourselves trapped in a cycle of suffering and discontent. In order to free oneself of all desires, one must first understand that the very act of wanting to not have desires is itself a desire. It is a desire born out of a longing for enlightenment, for inner peace, for some form of transcendence from the constant ebb and flow of life. To truly be desireless, one must come to terms with the paradoxical nature of this pursuit. We must accept that our desire for liberation is in fact a desire in disguise, and that true freedom lies not in the absence of desires, but in the ability to transcend them. It is in the understanding that desires are transient, ever-changing phenomena that we can begin to loosen their grip on our consciousness. By cultivating a sense of detachment and non-attachment to our desires, we can find a sense of inner peace and contentment that transcends the fleeting pleasures of the material world. Ultimately, the path to liberation is not about eradicating desires altogether, but rather about transforming our relationship to them. It is about learning to navigate the ebb and flow of desires with equanimity and grace, recognizing them for what they are – impermanent manifestations of our minds. In this way, we can start to break free from the endless cycle of craving and aversion that keeps us bound to the wheel of samsara. So, my dear friend, do not strive to be completely desireless, for that is an impossible feat. Instead, strive to understand the nature of desires and to cultivate a sense of inner peace and equanimity that transcends them. In doing so, you will find yourself on the path to true liberation and enlightenment.
