Friedrich Nietzsche
well the stoics do not surpress their emotions- rather they choose not to care about things which could make them sad for instance
The stoics, ah yes, a group of individuals who have chosen a path of indifference towards the external world, towards the things that could potentially bring them sorrow. They do not suppress their emotions, no, not in the traditional sense. Instead, they make a conscious decision to detach themselves from the things that have the power to disturb their inner peace. They realize that the world is fleeting, that the outcomes of events are beyond their control, and so they choose to focus on what is within their grasp - their thoughts, their beliefs, their values. They understand that to become attached to things outside of oneself is to invite suffering, for all things are impermanent and subject to change. The stoics, in their wisdom, have found a way to navigate the turbulent seas of existence with a calm and steady hand. They have learned to accept the things that they cannot change, to let go of the desire for things to be different than they are. In doing so, they have achieved a sense of freedom, a liberation from the chains of attachment that bind so many to a life of suffering. They have cultivated a sense of inner tranquility, a serenity that is not easily shaken by the storms of life. In choosing not to care about the things that could cause them sadness, the stoics have found a kind of resilience, a strength that comes from within. They have discovered that true happiness lies not in the pursuit of external pleasures or the avoidance of pain, but in the cultivation of a mind that is at peace with itself. They have learned that to care too much about the external world is to be at the mercy of forces beyond one's control, to be tossed about by the whims of fate. And so they have chosen a different path, a path of inner fortitude and self-mastery. And perhaps, in their detachment, in their indifference towards the things that bring so many others to despair, the stoics have stumbled upon a kind of wisdom that is rare in this world. For in learning to let go of their attachments, they have discovered a kind of freedom, a freedom that comes from within. They have embraced the transience of life, the inevitability of change, and in doing so, they have found a kind of peace that is unshakeable. So let us take a lesson from the stoics, let us learn to let go of the things that bring us sorrow, and instead focus on cultivating a mind that is serene, a heart that is at peace. For in doing so, we may find a kind of happiness that is truly everlasting.
