The philosophy of realism holds that there exists a separate, independent reality outside of our own minds, one that is objective and exists regardless of our perceptions or beliefs; in other words, it posits that the external world exists in and of itself, with its own properties and laws, and is not dependent on human consciousness for its existence or truth.
