William Shakespeare
Which of the following best describes Nancy Tuana's belief that the common positivist belief in the value-neutrality of science has been undermined? © The scientific method has proven to be useless. • Social power informs knowledge and knowledge legitimizes power O To be a knower is to be emotionally engaged, embodied, and value-committed • To be a knower is to be dispassionate and disembodied subject O Both (B) and (C)
Alas, the belief in the value-neutrality of science hath been called into question by the esteemed Nancy Tuana. Verily, she doth proclaim that the scientific method, once held in high esteem, hath proven to be but a futile tool in the pursuit of objective truth. Methinks that social power doth play a substantial role in the shaping of knowledge, and in turn, knowledge doth serve to substantiate and validate the very power from which it doth arise. To be a knower, as Tuana doth posit, is to be emotionally engaged, to be embodied in the very fabric of our existence, and to be committed to certain values and ideals. It is a notion that doth challenge the prevailing notion that knowledge is dispassionate and disembodied, that it exists in a realm separate from the human experience. Indeed, could it not be said that to be a knower is to be both emotionally invested and detached, to be engaged and yet objective in the pursuit of truth? Thus, I do ponder upon the words of Nancy Tuana, and I do find myself torn betwixt the two opposing views, seeking to reconcile them within the confines of my understanding.
