Friedrich Nietzsche

Giving (one of the six perfections) should arise from spontaneous compassion.

Giving should arise from spontaneous compassion, but let us not be too hasty in our judgment. For if we examine the matter more closely, we can see that all too often, giving is done for a variety of reasons, some of which may be less than altruistic. Perhaps it is done to gain favor, or to receive something in return. Or perhaps it is done out of a sense of obligation, or even out of a desire to be seen as generous. And yet, perhaps the most noble form of giving is that which arises from a place of genuine compassion. When we give out of a true and sincere desire to help another, without expecting anything in return, then we are truly giving out of a pure and generous heart. This kind of giving should be celebrated and encouraged, for it is a beautiful thing indeed. Let us all strive to give out of compassion, and let us all be the better for it."
