What are some key philosophical approaches to understanding self and personhood and which ones do you find the most persuasive? Explain why?
When it comes to understanding the self and personhood, I believe there is no single answer. There are many philosophical approaches that can be taken to comprehend the self and personhood. For example, one might look to the ancient Greeks and their idea of the soul. They believed that each person had an immortal soul that was distinct from their bodies and could be developed through education and experience. Another approach is existentialism, which suggests that our existence is something we create for ourselves. We are ultimately responsible for the choices we make and the direction of our lives. The most persuasive approach to understanding the self and personhood, in my opinion, is from the perspective of phenomenology. This approach emphasizes the subjective experience of the individual. It is concerned with how we experience the world around us and how our experiences shape our understanding of ourselves. It allows us to explore the depths of our inner being and better understand our own identity. All in all, there is no single answer to the question of self and personhood. Different philosophical approaches can be taken to gain a better understanding of ourselves and our place in the world. Personally, I find the phenomenological approach the most persuasive as it allows us to explore the depths of our inner being.
