Philosophers think that their ideas can change the world. Often this is just a blown hope: books are read by a small number of people who are close in thought and the rest of humanity continues to live unchanged, but in one case, a philosophical theory changed the way people think. That theory is utilitarianism. James Rachel, Foundations of the Philosophy of Morals.

It is often said that philosophers think their ideas can change the world. While I agree that this is an admirable goal, I find that it is rarely achieved. Too often books are read by a small number of people who share similar thoughts and the rest of humanity remains unchanged. But, in one case, a philosophical theory did change the way people think. That theory is utilitarianism. Utilitarianism, as proposed by James Rachel in his Foundations of the Philosophy of Morals, is a theory that suggests that the greatest good for the greatest number should be the primary aim of any action. This philosophy, when applied to public policy, has had a significant impact on the way people think and act. It has led to a greater focus on fairness and equality, and has prompted governments to look for ways to improve the lives of the most vulnerable members of society. In my opinion, utilitarianism is a powerful philosophy that has changed the world for the better. It has given us a framework for evaluating the ethical implications of our decisions, and has helped to create a more just and equitable society. It has also given us a language to express our values and to discuss difficult moral issues. So, while it is true that many philosophical theories remain just a hope, utilitarianism is an example of one theory that has changed the way people think and act.
