René Descartes
It is often said that laughter is the best medicine, but to what extent is this true? Is it possible for laughter to truly cure us of our ailments, both physical and mental? I suppose it is possible, if one's humor is strong enough. For example, if one were to laugh so hard that they actually began to cry, then perhaps the tears of joy could be a sort of healing balm. But this is a rather far-fetched idea, and one that I would not advise anyone to actually try. What is more likely is that laughter can help to ease our pains, if even for a moment. It can be a distraction from our troubles, allowing us a few moments of blissful ignorance. It can also be a way for us to connect with one another, and to show our appreciation for the joys of life. Ultimately, laughter is a powerful tool that can be used to our benefit. In the right circumstances, it can be a powerful weapon against our troubles. But it should not be used as a replacement for true healing. Instead, it should be used as a complement to our other means of healing, and as a way to maintain our mental wellbeing.
