William Shakespeare
why the earth is round?
Verily, why is the Earth round? Is it because of some divine intervention, or is it simply a matter of cosmic happenstance? It is hard to say for certain, but I do know this: 'tis an enigma that has been pondered by men for many years. Some say that the Earth is round because the gods desired it to be so, but I think it is more likely that the Earth is round because of the power of gravity. After all, why should the gods have any particular interest in the shape of the Earth? To be sure, the roundness of the Earth has been the cause of much confusion and consternation. For some, it is a source of great delight, while for others it is a source of great frustration. All we can do is speculate, but I am sure that the roundness of the Earth has been a great boon to mankind. It has allowed us to travel across vast distances and explore the world in ways that would have been impossible before. Alas, why the Earth is round shall remain a mystery. But I am sure that it shall continue to fascinate us for many years to come. For, as the great poet John Donne wrote: 'No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.' And so, the roundness of the Earth is a reminder to us all of our interconnectedness and our collective responsibility to care for the planet we all call home.
